Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus Overview

The C.W. Post Honors Program is open to students of all majors. It provides academically gifted
students with a course of study designed to help them realize their potential and graduate with the
finest possible credentials. The objective of the program is enrichment and critical thinking, not
acceleration. Its focus is on an individual. Most Honors Program students gain excellent jobs, go on
to graduate school or take advanced professional degrees.

The Honors Program curriculum emphasizes a liberal balance between traditional and innovative
studies. Honors classes are limited to 20 students and run as discussion-style seminars. They
encourage writing and oral presentations. Many satisfy writing across the curriculum requirements.
At the most advanced level, students work privately with professors in their major on tutorial and
thesis projects of their own creation.

Participation in the Honors Program means membership in a unique decision-making community that is
both academic and social. A diverse group of students, from all disciplines and many countries, join
with faculty to choose Honors Program curricula, course instructors and extracurricular activities.

Honors Program courses are divided into those that fulfill core requirements; advanced electives
that are exciting topic seminars, such as The Tango, Literatures of Africa and Marketing Strategies
for High Technology; and an individually researched Tutorial and Thesis in the student's major.
Students in Honors also have the advantage of enriched advisement. In addition to special
orientation sections of College 101, the Honors Program Director serves as a general mentor to
students in the program.

Students who enter as freshmen take 30 credits in Honors. Sophomores may engage in a three-year 18
credit Honors option; Juniors may become two-year participants taking 12 credits in Honors. All
Honors Program students must engage in research culminating in a thesis.

Honors Program students may earn Honors elective credit for participation in Long Island
University's Global College, with opportunities in England, Costa Rica, South Africa, India, Japan
and China; or study abroad through other opportunities. Students wishing to earn honors credit for
courses taken abroad must clear their specific request(s) with the Honors Director before leaving
and, on their return, submit the work for designated courses. Students who successfully complete the
courses will earn the equivalent of 3 Honors Advanced Elective credits. A maximum of 6 Honors
Elective credits may be taken in this manner.

Students in the Honors Program also participate in the Merit Fellowship, one of the most innovative
components of the C.W. Post Honors Program. The Merit Fellowship program broadens a student's
horizons and exposes the student to new and different things and ways of thinking. Students choose
to attend five events per semester from a variety of options including theater productions, the
Ethics Center Film Series, lectures sponsored by the Hillwood Art Museum and Poetry Center. During
the fall semester students are expected to attend an all-day Honors Program conference, which is
usually held the first week of November. The Fall 2008 conference will be devoted to Creativity and
Thought.

There is also a spring Community Service option for Merit Fellowship students who volunteer a
minimum of 20 hours per semester at a school, hospital, or organization.

The Honors Program and Merit Fellowship offers academic scholarships for all levels of
participation. These are frequently linked to larger university scholarship awards.
