Purdue University Overview
Purdue University offers a wide range of honors experiences including a university-wide honors
program and college/school based programs in Liberal Arts, Engineering, Agriculture, Science, and
Consumer and Family Sciences. Many departments throughout the University also have special honors
tracks of their own, so that some students at Purdue are able to graduate with departmental,
College, and University honors.
In fall 2005, Purdue University inaugurated a University-wide honors program, the University
Honors Program (UHP), which includes students enrolled in any undergraduate curriculum. The UHP
partners with existing honors programs and serves a subset of honors students from across all
academic disciplines. The selection process is by invitation only and does not require a separate
application. The program enrolls approximately 140 first-year students annually. Selection criteria
include SAT/ACT scores and high school academic record. SAT/ACT scores and high school academic
record are gleaned from undergraduate admission application to Purdue University. The UHP is
unable to consider ancillary materials such as a resume or personal statement. UHP students
represent the top 1% of admitted students in all academic colleges and schools. The average SAT
score of the 2007 UHP cohort was 1470.
The UHP offers a welcoming and nurturing home for participating students through a variety of
curricular and co-curricular activities. UHP¿s uniquely designed courses are taught by
distinguished faculty recognized for their teaching excellence. These classes are interdisciplinary
in nature with a strong communications component, and small class enrollments facilitate the
exchange of ideas and foster personal interactions among all class members. UHP¿s social
opportunities, international programs, and community outreach activities provide UHP students an
enriched university experience.
UHP academic requirements may be met by a combination of courses specially developed by the UHP
curriculum committee, honors courses in the colleges, and honors-level study-abroad courses.
Students, who successfully complete the program requirements, as certified by the Director of the
UHP, will receive a University honors diploma at graduation.
In sum, UHP benefits include specially designed honors courses, seminars, study abroad programs,
leadership opportunities, book club, and community service. The Lyceum is the residential learning
community for first-year UHP students.
