The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Overview

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Overview

Lloyd International Honors College at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro provides
outstanding undergraduate students with a nationally recognized, transforming, and practical Honors
education that gives you the skills, knowledge, and global perspective necessary to enter nationally
competitive graduate schools, to pursue successful careers, and to lead fulfilling personal and
civic lives.

Location

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is located in Greensboro, North Carolina, a diverse
metropolitan area of roughly 1 million people. It enjoys a moderate climate with four seasons and
is located within a two hours' drive of the Appalachian Mountains (for such activities as hiking,
kayaking, and skiing) and 4-1/2 hours of the Atlantic Coast (for such activities as swimming,
surfing, sailing, and fishing). The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is more than a
century old and has assumed its place among top-tier universities in North Carolina. Listed in 2008
as one of the Princeton Reviews "Best 366 Colleges" nationwide, UNCG is known for groundbreaking
research, community service, high-caliber faculty, and an education that prepares students for a
lifetime of community leadership. And at UNCG, students are encouraged to make the most of academic
and extracurricular opportunities on campus and in the wider community.

Academic Programs

Lloyd International Honors College offers two Honors programs-the International Honors Program and
the Disciplinary Honors Program. The International Honors Program is for students in any major who
wish to enhance their general-education studies and to pursue study or fieldwork beyond US borders.
Once students have declared a major, they can join the Disciplinary Honors Program, which provides
them with the opportunity to engage in high level study in their major and to do original,
sophisticated research under the supervision of a faculty member, thus giving them a competitive
advantage when applying to graduate school or starting a career. Students may choose to complete
either or both of these Honors programs. Those who complete both of these Honors Programs are
recognized for this especially high achievement by being awarded Full University Honors.

Honors Courses

Honors courses are taught by faculty members who are among the best at UNCG, who are deeply engaged
in their disciplines, and who are dedicated to helping students achieve their greatest potential.
Honors courses are typically small (20-25 students) and foster discussion, collaboration, and mutual
discovery among students and faculty. Two faculty are designated Chancellor's Fellows, and in this
capacity teach only in the Honors College for a full academic year. In addition, Honors students
participate in individualized undergraduate research with a faculty mentor, service-learning and
civic engagement projects in the US and overseas.

Honors Advising

Lloyd International Honors College staff offers individualized advising to help students discover
the best ways to take advantage of Honors at UNCG, and to make sure that students have the needed
support and encouragement along the way to completing their degrees. The Honors Adviser is
available to help students organize their Honors course schedules and to help students think
constructively about their academic plans.

Extra-Curricular and Student Leadership Opportunities

The Lloyd International Honors provides opportunities for student leadership, including the Honors
Student Advisory Board and the Honors Ambassadors program. In addition, Honors students benefit
from a significant travel grant to offset the cost of study abroad; priority course registration;
weekly Food for Thought lunches where students and faculty engage in civic intellectual discussion;
a Speakers & Fine Arts Series; and individual advising for nationally competitive undergraduate and
post-graduate fellowships such as the Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater, Mellon, and Truman.
In the past ten years, UNCG students have won 11 Fulbright Awards to study in such places as Canada,
France, Germany, Mali, and Sri Lanka!
